Singapore Management University, SMU is a city campus, situated in the heart of Singapore’s civic, cultural and business district. A design competition was held in September 2011, to select a design architect for the new SMU School of Law Building. A central component of the SMU School of Law will be its Law Library, which will be named the Kwa Geok Choo Law Library.

MKPL Architects won the design competition for this prestigious project. The other components of the new building include a 1400-seater Flexi-Theatre, teaching facilities ( seminar rooms, classrooms , lecture theatre etc ) , Moot Court, Pro-bono clinics and Research Centre. The new School of Law (SOL) building will be built on the site of the well-loved National Library at Stamford Road near Fort Canning Park, and in close proximity to the National Museum.

In essence, this project is about Integration, Inspiration and Innovation – a progressive and innovative building which integrates well into its city context and park setting. The SOL is designed to be distinctive landmark with a strong civic presence, a symbol for inspirational learning. It also provides an unique opportunity to reflect innovation in learning – flexible teaching spaces in collaborative settings to support and foster interdisciplinary work, intellectual exchange and social interaction – a vibrant learning environment which builds a strong community.
